Responsible Sourcing
Industry Standard for Credibility
Credibility, traceability, accountability, and sustainability are the cornerstones of the fish processing industry. Recognizing their importance, the European Fishmeal and Fish Oil Producers (EFFOP) have collaborated to establish the first European industry standard for draining and weighing unsorted pelagic landings intended for fishmeal and fish oil production.
Development of the Industry Standard
This industry standard supplements existing national legislation and international agreements. It was developed based on the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and the associated post-harvest practices for responsible fish utilization. Read the Industry Standard here.
Importance of Accurate Measurement
Accurate measurement and standardized units are essential for any market to function effectively. This standard ensures correct and impartial weighing of unsorted pelagic landings across Europe. By harmonizing practices, we aim to promote a sustainable future for pelagic fisheries and encourage other regions to adopt similar accurate and sustainable reporting methods.
Supervision of the Weighing Process
To prevent conflicts of interest, the weighing process should not be overseen by individuals with potential vested interests, such as buyers. The complete registration of all small pelagic bulk landings should be supervised by national fisheries control authorities, a designated weighing operator authorized by these authorities, or an independent and accredited commercial third party. This separation ensures impartiality and maintains a clear distinction between the weighing operator and the buyer.
Ensuring Sustainable Practices
Accurate reporting is essential for sustainable fishing practices and the collection of reliable scientific data. EFFOP, as buyers of small pelagics in bulk, has taken proactive steps to ensure proper recording of all catches. This not only aids in monitoring quota uptake but also promotes sustainable fishing practices, contributing to a fair and transparent industry.
Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals
The industry standard for draining and weighing unsorted pelagic landings for fishmeal and fish oil production is a significant step towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By addressing a core issue in the fishing industry, this standard supports SDG 14: Life Below Water. It specifically contributes to the target of effectively regulating harvesting and ending overfishing, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, as well as destructive fishing practices. Implementing science-based management plans helps restore fish stocks to sustainable levels.
Moreover, this impartial and universal standard is essential for achieving SDG 2: Zero Hunger, by promoting sustainable fishing practices that contribute to global food security. It also aligns with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, encouraging collaboration and adherence to international standards and practices. Through these efforts, the fishmeal and fish oil industry plays a crucial role in fostering sustainable development and ensuring the long-term health of marine ecosystems.
Moving Towards a Harmonized Future
The adoption of this industry standard represents a significant step towards a harmonized and sustainable future for pelagic fisheries in Europe. By setting a benchmark for accuracy and accountability, we hope to inspire similar commitments to sustainable practices worldwide.
