New economic report on the EU fish processing sector

2020.2.16

The European Commission has published the economic report “The EU fish processing sector” which has been written by the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF). One of STECF’s main findings from the EWG (Expert Working Group) report was that there had been an increase of +20% in the turnover across the sector during the analysed period (2008-2017). In 2017, the EU fish processing sector produced a turnover of approx. €32 billion and employed more than 130 thousand people.

In 2019, the European Commission adopted the Circular Economy Package which aims to implement waste in a circular economy in order to increase EU’s global competitiveness, foster sustainable economic growth and generate new jobs. The measures cover the whole cycle from production and consumption to waste management and the market for secondary raw materials. The package is a step in the right direction towards a climate-neutral, circular economy. The European Commission has pledged to boost the market for secondary raw materials, and they will support EU-wide research on raw material flows in the sector.
