New BSAC and NSAC Advice: Management of Predators
2026.5.6
As a member of both the North Sea Advisory Council (NSAC) and the Baltic Sea Advisory Council (BSAC), EFFOP welcomes the joint NSAC and BSAC advice on the management of predators such as seals and cormorants.
The advice focuses on the growing interactions between fisheries and predators in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It highlights that healthy and resilient fish stocks are essential for reducing conflicts and stresses the need for ecosystem based management. The proposal calls for better data, long term monitoring, and stronger coordination between countries and EU policies. It also underlines the importance of involving fishers, scientists, and authorities in developing practical and balanced solutions.
EFFOP supports this advice as an important step towards finding well balanced solutions that take into account fisheries livelihoods, marine ecosystems, and environmental protection. We see value in a coordinated and science based approach that can help ensure sustainable fisheries while protecting the marine environment for the future.
