EFFOP at IFFO Annual Conference in Tokyo

2025.10.27

EFFOP’s Managing Director, Anne Mette Bæk, joined global industry leaders at the IFFO Annual Conference held in Tokyo, Japan, from 20-22 October 2025. Speaking on behalf of Europe’s fishmeal and fish oil producers, she presented key insights into production developments and evolving regulatory frameworks across the region.

Her presentation, “European Fishmeal and Fish Oil: Production Insights and Regulatory Developments,” highlighted a strong and responsible European sector. EFFOP members represent 13 producing countries and handle close to 3 million tonnes of raw material annually, with nearly one-third derived from trimmings that support circular use of marine resources.

Anne Mette Bæk shared the latest trends in raw material sourcing, stock status, and market developments, while underlining challenges such as shared pelagic stock management, quota decisions and certification barriers that do not always reflect European conditions. She also outlined initiatives to improve recognition for sustainably managed European fisheries, including the industry-driven Responsible Pelagic Fisheries Foundation. The importance of upcoming EU regulatory changes covering contaminants, circularity in feed and new pathways for producing fish oil for human consumption were also highlighted.

Reflecting on the event, she said: “Happy to share insights on the important European marine nutrients production – so crucial for healthy blue foods production – with the 500+ participants attending the IFFO Annual Conference. Always a pleasure to connect with colleagues from across the global marine ingredients industry!”

She concluded by urging policymakers to recognize the vital role of seafood and marine ingredients in future EU protein and food security strategies. EFFOP will continue working closely with authorities, scientists and industry partners to support sustainable resource management and supply of marine nutrients across Europe.
