EFFOP Board visits Brussels
2024.11.20
Our Executive board held our annual meetings in Brussels on November 18th and 19th, 2024. This gathering brought together key stakeholders from across Europe to engage in discussions, foster collaboration, and strategize on the future of fishmeal and fish oil production.
Dialogue with the EU Commission’s DG MARE
A highlight of the meetings was a visit to the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) where we had the opportunity to discuss important topics such as initiatives to strengthen European aquaculture, circularity within the sector, fish welfare, and the important role of marine nutrients in the blue value chain and the upcoming EU protein strategy.
EFFOP emphasized its ongoing efforts to support low-carbon aquaculture production, which aligns with EU priorities on sustainable development. Discussions also focused on the essential role of fishmeal and fish oil in fish welfare, as well as proposals to enhance circularity by maximizing the use of by-products. DG MARE’s initiatives resonated with EFFOP’s goals, particularly regarding the importance of integrating blue nutrients to meet growing global food demands.
Engaging with UK and Icelandic Missions to the EU
EFFOP also had productive discussions with counsellors from the UK Mission to the EU and the Icelandic Mission to the EU. These meetings provided valuable insights into the missions’ roles, their relationships with European institutions, and critical issues affecting the fisheries sector. Dialogue focused on shared challenges, underscoring the importance of sustainable resource management in the shared marine ecosystems of the North Atlantic.
Collaboration with Industry Stakeholders
Recognizing the growing global population and the increasing demand for marine food production systems, EFFOP engaged with the European Fish Processors Association and the European Federation of National Organisations of Importers and Exporters of Fish (AICEP-CEP). Discussions emphasized the critical role of aquafeed and marine ingredients like fishmeal and fish oil in meeting the rising demand for high-quality proteins and omega-3 fatty acids. Collaborative dialogue with these stakeholders is essential to address shared challenges and find solutions.
Welcoming ANFAPHES: Our Newest Member from Spain
EFFOP introduced ANFAPHES as its newest producer member in 2024. Representing the fishmeal and fish oil division of ANFACO-CECOPESCA, ANFAPHES is Spain’s largest association for fishery products, headquartered in Vigo. With a focus on maximizing the value of seafood by-products, ANFAPHES aligns with EFFOP’s commitment to circularity. This new membership also grants Spain representation on the EFFOP board, fostering deeper collaboration within the European network.
Reflecting on 2024 and Looking Ahead
The past year presented significant challenges for European fishmeal and fish oil producers. The post-Brexit landscape brought bans on sandeel fishing, increased focus on PFAS, and reduced fishing quotas. EFFOP responded proactively, advocating for science-based solutions to navigate these issues.
As 2025 approaches, EFFOP remains committed to supporting its members in addressing emerging challenges. We would like to thank our board and members for their dedication and collective efforts in 2024.
