In the European Parliament: EFFOP Advocates for Circular Economy and Food Sustainability

Anne Mette Bæk, the managing director of EFFOP, recently took part in a BlueBio Policy Event in the European Parliament. The event “Connecting the dots for a circular Blue Bioeconomy: From science to policy and regulatory solutions”, aimed to bridge the gap between scientific insights and policy implementation. The event was chaired by MEP Clara Aguilera.

Anne Mettes presence as a representative of the European Fishmeal and Fish Oil Producers provided valuable perspective on some of the regulatory challenges faced by the industry. She also highlighted the contributions of the marine ingredients sector towards sustainability, such as the fact that 40 % of the raw material used by EFFOP members is rest raw material from the fish processing sector.

In her intervention Anne Mette also pointed to the regulatory hurdles for the industry to produce food grade fish oil in the same sites as oil for feed is produced. Such integration is pivotal for enhancing industry efficiency and making best value of raw materials. She emphasized the need to revisit the 2009 Animal By-Product Regulation to align with the principles of the circular economy and food sustainability, without compromising safety standards in the current landscape.

Moreover, EFFOP extends gratitude to the North Sea Advisory Council for affording them the platform to share industry insights at the BlueBio Cofund event, which centered on the circular blue economy.
